just what are super foods?

super foods is a nickname given to natural, whole foods that have a super high concentration of antioxidants, plant polyphenols, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other beneficial nutrients. antioxidants minimize the damage from free radicals that compromise cells and alter DNA. when a cell’s DNA mutates, the cell starts to grow abnormally. this is how some cancers start. antioxidants destroy the power of free radicals to help ward off cancer, protect the heart, and counter the effects of aging.

while most fruits, vegetables, and spices can be considered super foods in their own right, some foods are more nutrient dense. super foods are nutritional powerhouses, providing superior nutrition in less calories than other foods, along with plenty of natural fiber. this makes superfoods beneficial to a diet and for weight loss. you eat less and consume fewer calories. but give your body superior nutrition compared to that fast food meal.

we have a saying here, ‘lucky to live hawaii’ reaffirmed whenever I find fresh, local mangosteen at the farmer’s market. the white flesh is delicious but it’s the rind that contains most of this fruits super powers

mangosteen is a delicious tasting fruit! believed to have originated in the sunda islands of Indonesia, it only grows in tropical climates. mangosteen is high in iron and fiber. mangosteens are full of the powerful antioxidant xanthones, containing 40 of the 200 known natural xanthones. these beneficial xanthones are mostly contained in the edible pericarp or rind of the fruit, versus the sweet tasting white aril or flesh. xanthones are plant phenols that boost the body’s immune system. xanthones are considered super antioxidants. can’t find fresh mangosteen? look for freeze-dried powder or capsules.

if you live in northern europe or asia, you’re lucky enough to be able to forage for fresh elderberries

when comparing common, everyday fruits, like apples, oranges, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, pomegranates, and bananas, blackcurrants are the healthiest. Plus, they contain more antioxidants than the previous fruits listed. They are also rich in Vitamin C. There is a current trend for exotic super fruits but you don’t have to go to the ends of the earth to find health boosting fruits. Try substituting raisins with currants, in all of your favorite recipes. And added bonus….they are a lot smaller and don’t need to be chopped.
